Etheric Body - The Matrix of the Material

Text taken from the book Avessalom Podvodny's "Subtle Bodies".
 Between the dense and subtle bodies there is a certain analogy: in particular, the atmanic body is very similar to the astral, the buddhic - to the etheric, and the causal - to the physical.

Nature of the Etheric Body

Keywords: sensations, bioenergetics; health, physiology; functional features.

Vitality, endurance, and the physical body's resistance to various infections are determined by the overall energetic level of the etheric body. Diseases of physical organs and systems are always preceded by malfunctions in their etheric counterparts. Good etheric energetics signify excellent protection for the physical body. Such people don't get cold, can, with some effort, walk barefoot on coals or hold their hand in a candle flame without harm, so even small hairs don't burn. When muscles contract and relax, ligaments stretch and loosen, and joint surfaces rub against each other in the physical body, there is not only an expenditure, but also a restoration of etheric energy, with a different, finer spectrum of vibrations being restored than what is expended.

At the same time, many people, especially athletes and ballerinas, very often ruthlessly exploit their joints, forcing them to work in completely unbearable conditions. Here it's important to know that every joint (as well as muscles and ligaments) has two fundamentally different modes of operation: with a positive and with a negative etheric balance, and this needs to be clearly understood, and moreover, felt directly by oneself, if you want to avoid illness.

A mode with a positive etheric balance is a movement that increases the etheric energy of the joint (muscle, ligament). Subjectively, it is experienced as a pleasant stretching, produced by forces external to the joint and its ligaments – up to the point where slight painful sensations appear, which are perceived as healing. After the stretching ceases, a pleasant warmth and fullness of vital energy are felt in the joint – the gratitude of the nourished etheric body.

A mode of movement with a negative etheric balance decreases the etheric energy of the joint, ligament, or organ. In this state, they work under overload, to the point of wear and tear, and the etheric body urgently borrows energy from its other parts, transferring it to the overloaded organ. All modern sports are built on this scheme, essentially differing little from bullfighting, where athletes act as bulls, and the banderilleros and picadors are the spectators and the entire system of competitions.

Less obvious than sports, but no less destructive to the physical body, is the so-called sedentary lifestyle. It also consists predominantly of movements with a negative etheric balance, compensated mainly by food. The reason for this is that a positive etheric balance arises only with a certain average, meaning not too large and not too small, load on the muscle, ligament, or joint: then they pleasantly warm up and are perceived by the person as independent sources of energy and heat. If the load is too great or too small, the amount of etheric energy expended on movement exceeds that received from it – and a deficit arises.

Influence of the Etheric Body on Health

The boundaries of the etheric body are variable. If a person is healthy and feels good, it extends beyond the physical body by several centimeters or even tens of centimeters. There is a social taboo on the contact of etheric bodies, excluding strictly ceremonial moments: a handshake or a kiss on a lady's hand upon meeting. To approach a semi-familiar person so closely as to feel their etheric body with one's own means to directly express one's frank interest in them, most often perceived as a direct invitation to intimacy.

Conversely, a rupture of the etheric body leads to a difficult-to-treat disease of the corresponding physical organ, and in fact, doctors' efforts are aimed, directly or indirectly, precisely at etheric healing, otherwise the disease quickly recurs.

The quality of the skin is determined by the intensity of its etheric protection. When the latter weakens, the skin loses elasticity and firmness, becoming flabby and wrinkled, thus compensating for the loss of its former elastic qualities: it is important for the skin to have a certain mobility around muscles and bones, which is compensated by folds when elasticity decreases. When the etheric energy of the intervertebral discs weakens, they also become less elastic, but here the compensation proceeds differently: osteophytes — special bone growths that strengthen the weakened vertebral column — proliferate around them; however, this prevents it from bending, but integrity is preserved, meaning it does not crumble into pieces.

The Etheric Absolute is the source of energy supporting the physical plane, the prana of the Hindus. Connecting to the Etheric Absolute means the finest creativity in energetic flows – the god Shiva, who created numerous Hatha Yoga poses.

The etheric body represents the main energy framework, or matrix, of the physical. It contains information about the structure of the physical body, according to which a child grows and recovers from illnesses, cuts, and so on. Diseases of the physical body are usually preceded by disruptions in etheric energy, which then materialize in the human body. The etheric body receives energy (of various kinds) from three sources: the astral body, the physical body, and the environment. A person generally feels the state of their etheric body as their level of vitality, energy, cheerfulness, tone, and immunity. The influence of the astral body on the etheric has long been noted – this is, in particular, the influence of mood on vitality. The influence of the physical body on the etheric is even more noticeable – this is the energy of (moderate) physical exercises and digested food. The third source of the etheric body's energy is the surrounding environment (which can, however, also poison it), represented by the four elements (fire, earth, air, and water), which exchange energy with the etheric body directly. Similarly, the astral body directly exchanges energy with the astral bodies of other people, as well as the astral plane of the subtle world. The same applies to the mental and other bodies. But still, the main sources of the etheric body's energy are within the person themselves: these are the astral and physical bodies. The etheric body receives energy of lower vibrations from the physical; more precisely, it takes a part of the vibrations released during food assimilation. A sign that the etheric body is ready to accept energy from the physical is appetite, which also (if not spoiled, as discussed below) tells a person what specific food energies their etheric body needs. If a person eats without appetite, the energy of the digested food will not enter the etheric body and will be distortedly distributed throughout the physical body and sent to more subtle bodies, bypassing the etheric, leading, for example, to severe emotional overstrain in the astral body: the person starts to "run wild with too much energy."

Culture and Interaction of the Etheric Body

The culture of the etheric body in the average modern person is very low. We feel it only when and where strong etheric disturbances occur, for example, ruptures, usually accompanied by severe physical pain — then one listens involuntarily. At the same time, it is very important to feel the etheric structures within oneself in a healthy state — this affects both the well-being of all organs and the effectiveness and beauty of all human movements. Yet, even the most etherically uncultured person clearly feels their etheric body at certain moments. These are:

  • a state of strong hunger and thirst and, conversely, pleasant satiety after a delicious meal;
  •
  • severe drowsiness, fatigue after heavy physical work and vigor after sleeping in the fresh air;
  •
  • a state of severe nausea when the physical body prepares to expel a product that is etherically unsuitable for it;
  •
  • physical contact with a loved one or, conversely, an unpleasant person, regardless of the presence of sexual sensations;
  •
  • meditations on the beach, in a warm bath, or in an ice hole.
  •

Clumsy, awkward movements, the inability to go around a table corner without hitting it; dishes and other small objects constantly slipping from a person's hands and breaking on the floor — all this reveals a person who has not found contact with their etheric body and therefore lives in disharmony with it.

Conversely, smooth, mime-like movements, creating the illusion of moving in a dense medium, signify a precise coordination of the etheric and physical bodies. When they are well-coordinated, a person is capable of fast movements during which the physical body does not go beyond the etheric — an art mastered by good dancers and martial arts masters: karate, kung fu, and so on.

Etheric interactions within a family happen constantly every day: food is prepared, clothes are washed, children and adults are patted, stroked, and kissed, and if there is no poisonous effect from the astral plane, for example, a strong (even if repressed) emotional rejection by parents of children or each other, then, as a rule, a certain coziness, that is, a soft etheric field, arises in the home.

One should distinguish between causal, mental, and astral restrictions imposed on the etheric body. The necessity of keeping one's physical body within certain limits — say, not leaning too far out a window and not crossing the street on a red light — by no means exhausts the purely etheric restrictions imposed on a civilized person by the social environment. Most rules of etiquette relate to the limitation and ordering of a person's etheric manifestations. Even just picking up an item from a table and fiddling with it in your hands for a little longer than allowed when you are visiting — you can't even do that, you'll be considered an uneducated boor who doesn't know elementary rules of social behavior.

Mental prohibitions and limitations imposed on the etheric body are often associated with a person's unsuccessful attempts to adhere to social ideals of physical beauty and harmony. Who in their youth is satisfied with their nose, legs, or belly? However, the discrepancy with desired physical forms affects not the physical but the etheric body. When a person mentally tries to shrink themselves somewhere and expand somewhere else, they usually don't understand that their seemingly innocent dreams distort their etheric body and disrupt its coordination with the physical.

However, the worst thing for the etheric body is the astral's war with it. It is difficult to become beautiful, but very easy to become unattractive, even ugly. To do this, it is enough to hate one's face or figure. Then the etheric body sharply recedes inside the physical, protruding beyond its surface in certain places in the form of sharp fangs — in this style, artists depict fairytale witches and sorcerers.

A beautiful, well-groomed etheric body, whose energy is enhanced by exquisite clothing and cosmetics, is necessary for creating the image of a beauty or a handsome person, and here the work of the masseur, hairdresser, and makeup artist finds its culmination. When such a being appears in society, owners of strong and beautiful causal bodies are involuntarily filled with envy. After all, etheric energy is much denser and more palpable than causal! It literally "captivates the gaze," but having saturated them with etheric splendor, society (oh, human ingratitude!) "distracts" itself again to its ongoing affairs.
